Fraser Coast Hybrid Project Starts Construction

Construction is underway on the Fraser Coast Hybrid Project, moving a major solar and battery development near Maryborough into physical delivery.
Global Power Generation Australia, part of Spanish energy group Naturgy, is developing the project with 330 MWp of solar generation and a 180 MW / 360 MWh battery energy storage system.
The development represents an investment of more than $490 million and is expected to create up to 400 jobs during peak construction.
One of Queensland’s largest hybrid energy builds
The project is being developed in the Fraser Coast region, approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Maryborough.
Global Power Generation’s current project profile lists:
- 330 MWp of installed solar capacity;
- a 180 MW / 360 MWh battery energy storage system;
- 528,090 solar panels;
- 84 battery units; and
- an operating target of 2028.
The approximately 290 MW figure reported by some industry publications refers to the solar facility’s AC capacity, while the developer lists the array at 330 MWp on a peak DC basis.
The project is expected to generate approximately 380 GWh of renewable electricity each year.
Construction creates a broad delivery pipeline
The project is no longer an approvals-only or future-development story.
With investment committed and construction commencing, the focus now shifts to delivering the physical solar, battery, civil and grid-connection infrastructure.

More than 528,000 panels and 84 battery units
The physical scale of the project provides a clearer picture of the construction challenge.
The solar component will require more than 528,000 panels to be installed across a large rural site, supported by thousands of tracker assemblies, internal roads, cable routes and electrical equipment.
The battery component will consist of 84 units providing 180 MW of power and 360 MWh of energy storage, equivalent to two hours of discharge at maximum output.
This hybrid configuration allows solar generation and battery storage to share grid infrastructure while enabling energy to be stored and dispatched during periods of higher demand.
Grid connection through Teebar Creek
The project is expected to connect to Queensland’s electricity network through Powerlink’s 275 kV Teebar Creek Substation.
This will require high-voltage connection infrastructure, protection systems, controls, testing and coordination with the existing transmission network.
For electrical contractors, this part of the build may be as commercially significant as the solar array itself.

Naturgy describes the project as its largest investment in Australia and its second Australian solar-and-battery hybrid development.
Regional jobs and supply-chain demand
Up to 400 workers are expected to be employed during peak construction.
Beyond direct onsite roles, a project of this size could generate demand for:
- regional accommodation and catering;
- transport and freight services;
- vehicle and equipment maintenance;
- fuel and consumables;
- cranes and lifting equipment;
- temporary facilities and sanitation;
