Liontown study sharpens Sunshine Metals’ mid-2027 gold pathway.
Sunshine Metals has released an updated mining study for the Liontown gold project near Charters Towers, lifting projected net operating cashflow after all capital to about $179.8 million while reducing the all-in sustaining cost to about $2,579 per ounce.
The study models a staged open-pit and underground operation targeting about 79,541 ounces of mined gold and 951,732 ounces of mined silver over an approximately 66-month mine life. Sunshine is targeting first production in mid-2027, with the schedule tied directly to completion and commissioning of the company’s Mt Moss processing facility.
For Queensland contractors, the development has moved beyond a purely geological story: Sunshine says early contractor engagement is underway and open-pit mining and haulage tenders are planned for late 2026.

Sunshine has updated Liontown from study concept toward an executable mining sequence
The latest Liontown mining study updates the February 2026 work using Sunshine Metals’ July 2026 mineral resource estimate. The company says the revised study delivers about a 10% improvement in projected net operating cashflow after capital and about a 6% reduction in all-in sustaining cost, while retaining a staged open-pit and underground development concept.
The study outlines mined production of 79,541 ounces of gold and 951,732 ounces of silver. After recovery losses, the model forecasts about 66,900 ounces of recovered gold and 661,000 ounces of recovered silver. The current study is deliberately focused on gold-only and gold-dominant mineralisation and uses only about 14% of the broader Liontown resource, leaving the bulk of the polymetallic copper-zinc-lead-gold-silver inventory outside the base-case economics.
Liontown sits about 40 kilometres south-west of Charters Towers. Sunshine’s broader Ravenswood Consolidated project is in an established North Queensland mining district and is connected by sealed roads and regional infrastructure. The project’s proposed production system now depends on two linked assets: mining at Liontown and processing at the company’s Mt Moss operation.

Open pit, underground mining, road haulage and a brownfield plant conversion
The updated study models a multi-stage open pit followed by underground extraction. Sunshine says the operation covered by the study would run for about five and a half years, with open-pit mining occurring over roughly the first 27 months before underground production from the higher-grade Au Panel becomes dominant.
Ore is intended to be transported by road to Mt Moss, around 220 kilometres away. Sunshine acquired the former magnetite operation in July 2026 and is converting its existing 300,000-tonne-per-year grinding circuit into a gold processing facility by adding leaching, elution and refining components.
The Mt Moss conversion is already in an active engineering and procurement phase. Sunshine has reported completed design work with Detech Engineering, procurement of long-lead items and tender preparation for civil works, CIL tank fabrication, fine ore bin fabrication and structural steel. Those packages are part of the processing-facility workstream rather than the Liontown mining contract itself.
The revised economics point to early cashflow, but the study remains preliminary
Sunshine’s base case forecasts approximately $497.5 million in gross revenue and about $179.8 million in net operating cashflow after all capital. Life-of-mine capital is estimated at about $56 million, while maximum cash drawdown is approximately $5.5 million. The company also reports an all-in sustaining cost of about $2,579 per ounce of gold.
The attraction of the staged model is that later capital is expected to be funded from operating cashflow under the base case, reducing the amount of capital required before first production. The study also indicates a short modeled payback period once production begins.
Those figures should still be read as study outcomes, not guaranteed operating results. Capital, operating costs, recoveries, realised metal prices, contractor pricing, resource conversion and the Mt Moss delivery schedule can all change the actual outcome. The study also becomes more reliant on Inferred material in later years, which increases the importance of additional drilling and resource conversion before the back end of the schedule is treated with the same confidence as the early mine plan.
Approvals and contractor procurement now sit directly on the critical path to mid-2027
Mining lease, Mt Moss construction and contract awards are the next practical gates
Sunshine says mining and environmental approvals are well advanced. Final conditions associated with the relevant mining lease application have been satisfied, with approval targeted in late 2026. Environmental baseline studies and amendment work are also progressing.
The processing side is equally important. Mt Moss is targeted to move through construction in late 2026 and commissioning in mid-2027. Sunshine has previously indicated construction of the plant conversion is expected to begin in October or November 2026, with the mine schedule designed to start roughly two months before processing so initial ore stocks can be built.
For BBI readers, that means the strongest near-term signals will be approval completion, Mt Moss civil/fabrication contract awards, open-pit mining and haulage tenders, and evidence that the funding package and construction schedule remain aligned.

The contractor signal is becoming more tangible as mining and haulage tenders approach
The strongest new commercial signal in the study update is Sunshine’s statement that early contractor engagement is underway and that tenders for contract open-pit mining and haulage are planned for late 2026. Unlike generic capability speculation, those workstreams are explicitly identified by the company as upcoming procurement activity.
Additional capability demand sits around the linked Mt Moss conversion. Previously announced workstreams include concrete and formwork, CIL foundations, feed-hopper and fine-ore-bin works, structural steel fabrication, CIL tank fabrication, fuel supply, cyanide and mill consumables. Maintenance, electrical, mechanical, environmental monitoring and site services will also be relevant to operations, although individual future packages, values and award timing should not be treated as confirmed until Sunshine releases them.

Mining and haulage are the clearest upcoming packages
Open-pit mining and road haulage are the direct procurement signals from the updated study. Mt Moss adds a parallel construction and supply chain that can create opportunities across civil, fabrication, mechanical, electrical, processing, logistics and consumables.
The timing is important. Late-2026 tender activity would move the project from early market engagement into formal contractor selection, while construction and commissioning performance at Mt Moss will determine whether the mine can maintain the target production window.
BBI recently covered the Mt Moss refurbishment and its civil and fabrication tender pipeline. This article is a separate stage-change update focused on the Liontown mine plan, economics and mining/haulage procurement pathway.
