A major freight bottleneck in Queensland’s Bowen Basin has been removed with the opening of the Bill Murphy Bridge on Saraji Road, a key transport route connecting mining operations between Dysart and Moranbah.
The new 100-metre bridge, built at a cost of approximately $21 million, replaces the old Phillips Creek Bridge and provides a stronger, higher and more flood-resilient crossing for heavy vehicles transporting resources to export ports.
The infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly improve freight reliability for mining companies and contractors operating across Central Queensland.
Critical Transport Link for the Bowen Basin
Saraji Road plays a vital role in supporting the movement of coal and other resources from the Bowen Basin, one of the world’s largest metallurgical coal regions.
The new bridge ensures year-round access for freight vehicles, reducing delays caused by flooding that previously affected the older structure.
The previous crossing was a 35-metre bridge that frequently closed during heavy rain events, creating costly disruptions for supply chains and mining operations.
With the new design, the bridge deck has been raised and strengthened to improve flood resilience and accommodate heavy mining transport traffic.
Key Design Features
The new Bill Murphy Bridge includes several upgrades designed specifically for regional freight corridors:
- 100-metre bridge span, replacing the former 35-metre crossing
- Two 3.5-metre traffic lanes suitable for heavy vehicles
- One-metre shoulders on both sides
- Higher deck level to improve flood immunity
- Improved road approaches to increase safety and traffic flow
The project also included works across a one-kilometre construction corridor along Saraji Road.
Construction began in February 2025, with works delivered by contractor Davbridge Constructions.
Joint Government Infrastructure Investment
The bridge was delivered through a partnership between Isaac Regional Council, the Queensland Government, and the Australian Government.
Funding contributions included:
- $14.4 million – Australian Government
- $3.6 million – Queensland Government
- Approximately $3 million – Isaac Regional Council
Officials say the project highlights the importance of coordinated infrastructure investment to support regional industries and supply chains.

The bridge was officially named Bill Murphy Bridge following community consultation.
Bill Murphy was an early landowner in the Dysart region who contributed land for community facilities including the Dysart Pony Club, Rodeo Grounds and Motocross track.
The naming honours his long-standing contribution to the local community and development of the region.
