Construction of the Queensland Aeromedical Precinct has reached the halfway milestone, with ADCO Constructions progressing the major purpose-built aviation and health facility between Brisbane Airport’s parallel runways.

The physical construction project is valued at approximately $217 million, while the Queensland Government’s broader commitment to the precinct and associated long-term operational arrangements is approximately $430 million.

Once operational, the precinct will consolidate major aeromedical and emergency aviation services including the Royal Flying Doctor Service, LifeFlight, Retrieval Services Queensland and Queensland Police Service Aviation Capability Group.

Fresh development — 14 August 2026 Brisbane Airport and the Queensland Government have confirmed that construction of the Aeromedical Precinct has officially reached the halfway point.

The latest milestone provides measurable evidence of physical construction progress, with major foundation and structural quantities now publicly reported.

Across the site, more than 700 tonnes of steel, 2,500 piles and 300 tilt panels have now been installed since construction began.

Brisbane Airport describes the development as Australia’s largest dedicated aeromedical facility.

The precinct extends for roughly 700 metres — a footprint Brisbane Airport compares with the length of its Domestic Terminal.

Its location between Brisbane Airport’s parallel runways is central to the operating concept, giving aeromedical aircraft direct access to the airport’s 24/7 aviation network.

Construction must also interface with a live airport environment, adding staging, access, security and aviation-safety considerations to normal major-project delivery.

The precinct brings Queensland’s major aeromedical services into one operating hub

Royal Flying Doctor Service, LifeFlight, Retrieval Services Queensland and Queensland Police Service aviation operations are expected to use the integrated precinct.

The patient-transfer facility is particularly important because patients arriving by aircraft can move through a purpose-designed clinical environment before transfer into road ambulances and Brisbane’s hospital network.

More than 8,000 recent patient movements underline the operational need

Brisbane Airport’s halfway announcement also provides a snapshot of how heavily the existing aeromedical network is already used.

In the year to June 2026, the Royal Flying Doctor Service transported 7,207 patients from 60 regional, rural and remote Queensland communities through Brisbane Airport.

Brisbane-based LifeFlight helicopter crews assisted 603 people, while its jet operations supported another 405 patients.

The construction project is therefore not creating an entirely new service model from scratch.

ADCO Constructions is delivering the Brisbane Aeromedical Base under a Design & Construct arrangement for Brisbane Airport.

ADCO lists the project at $217 million with a 32-month duration.

The contractor describes the site as involving live aircraft operations together with commercial, maintenance and support facilities, substantial civil works and ground improvement.

That live-airport interface adds another layer of delivery complexity, requiring coordination of construction activity with ongoing aviation operations and airport security requirements.
