Six Queensland Battery Projects Could Create New Civil and Electrical Work Pipeline

Queensland Battery Projects: Six CIS Wins Could Drive Contractor Pipeline

Queensland has taken the biggest slice of Australia’s latest battery storage tender.

And for contractors, the opportunity is not just inside the battery containers.

The latest Capacity Investment Scheme storage tender has selected 15 battery energy storage projects across the National Electricity Market, with a combined capacity of 4.2GW and 16.1GWh.

Queensland received the largest allocation, with six successful battery projects totalling more than 6GWh of storage capacity.

The selected Queensland projects include Byellee BESS, Ganymirra Energy Storage System, Grahams Battery, Majors Creek Energy Storage System, Oaky Creek BESS and Woonga Creek BESS.

For civil contractors, electrical contractors, substation specialists, grid connection teams, earthworks contractors, concrete suppliers, fencing contractors, fire systems providers and regional logistics businesses, this is a major Project Watch item.

Battery storage is often discussed as an energy market story.

But on the ground, large BESS projects are also construction projects.

They require land preparation, access roads, foundations, drainage, transformers, switchgear, substations, cable trenches, fire systems, fencing, communications, testing and commissioning.

Contractors following Queensland’s fast-moving energy buildout should also monitor BBI energy coverage and broader electrical infrastructure updates.

Queensland Takes the Largest Battery Allocation

The Capacity Investment Scheme tender result is a strong signal for Queensland’s battery storage market.

Nationally, the tender selected 15 projects across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

Queensland’s six successful projects are spread across several regional locations, including Kogan, Bororen, Majors Creek, Ellesmere, Lower Wonga and Byellee.

The Queensland projects listed in the tender result include:

  • Byellee BESS — 300MW / 1,160MWh
  • Ganymirra Energy Storage System — 250MW / 1,000MWh
  • Grahams Battery — 350MW / 1,428MWh
  • Majors Creek Energy Storage System — 250MW / 1,000MWh
  • Oaky Creek BESS — 250MW / 1,000MWh
  • Woonga Creek BESS — 350MW / 1,223MWh

That gives Queensland more than 6GWh of selected battery storage capacity from this tender round.

For industry, the size of the allocation matters because battery storage projects are becoming a recurring contractor market, not a one-off energy novelty.

Why Battery Projects Matter for Contractors

Large battery projects can look simple from a distance.

Rows of battery units, a connection point and a fenced site.

But delivery is more complex than that.

A utility-scale BESS project can involve:

  • site clearing
  • earthworks
  • access roads
  • stormwater drainage
  • concrete foundations
  • cable trenches
  • transformer pads
  • switchgear installation
  • substation works
  • grid connection works
  • fire protection systems
  • security fencing
  • communications systems
  • testing and commissioning

This is why the Queensland battery projects should be watched by more than energy developers and investors.

They are also relevant to civil, electrical, structural, geotechnical, fire, security, communications and industrial service contractors.

Grahams Battery Adds a Darling Downs Energy Storage Watch Item

Grahams Battery at Kogan is one of the major Queensland projects selected under the tender.

The project is listed at 350MW and 1,428MWh, making it one of the larger Queensland storage projects in the round.

Kogan is already part of Queensland’s energy landscape, and new storage infrastructure in the region could support grid reliability as the state’s generation mix changes.

For contractors, the likely watch areas include civil pads, access, drainage, transformer infrastructure, electrical balance of plant, grid connection works and commissioning.

Businesses working across the Darling Downs and broader southern Queensland infrastructure market should treat Grahams Battery as a project to follow closely.

Rutherglen at Bororen Points to a Gladstone Region Contractor Story

The Rutherglen Battery near Bororen is another major Queensland project named in reporting around the tender result.

At 400MW and 1,602MWh, it is one of the largest projects in the successful national storage round.

Its location gives it a strong Central Queensland and Gladstone region angle.

That matters because Gladstone is already one of Queensland’s most important industrial energy regions.

Battery storage near industrial load and transmission infrastructure can create contractor opportunities across both construction and grid integration.

This also connects with BBI’s existing coverage of the Powerlink Gladstone Project and Gladstone Industrial Services Directory.

For local suppliers, the watch areas include civil works, electrical contracting, fencing, access roads, fire protection, security systems, cranes, transport and commissioning support.

Majors Creek and Ganymirra Create a North Queensland Battery Cluster

The Ganymirra Energy Storage System and Majors Creek Energy Storage System are both listed at Majors Creek.

Together, the two Edify Energy projects represent 500MW and 2,000MWh of storage capacity.

The location gives the projects a strong North Queensland contractor angle, particularly for businesses around Townsville, Woodstock, Ayr, Charters Towers and surrounding regions.

Battery clusters can create efficiencies for developers, but they can also create concentrated demand for local services.

Potential contractor requirements may include:

  • access road works
  • bulk earthworks
  • hardstands
  • transformer foundations
  • substation works
  • electrical installation
  • communications systems
  • fire safety systems
  • security fencing
  • operations and maintenance facilities

For regional suppliers, these projects could also create indirect demand for accommodation, fuel, water carts, plant hire, transport, local maintenance and workforce support.

Businesses around North Queensland can also use the Townsville Mining and Industrial Services Directory to improve visibility across infrastructure and industrial supply chains.

Oaky Creek and Woonga Creek Add More Regional Storage Workfronts

Oaky Creek BESS and Woonga Creek BESS add further regional spread to Queensland’s successful CIS storage allocation.

Oaky Creek BESS is listed at 250MW and 1,000MWh, while Woonga Creek BESS is listed at 350MW and 1,223MWh.

Both projects add to the pattern now emerging across Queensland: batteries are moving into regional locations where grid reliability, renewable generation, transmission access and local land availability intersect.

For contractors, this means the battery pipeline is not concentrated in one city or one industrial precinct.

It is a statewide project pipeline.

That creates opportunities for regional civil firms, local subcontractors, electrical service providers, equipment hire companies, transport operators and commissioning specialists.

The Contractor Work Is Bigger Than the Battery Units

The battery containers are the visible part of a BESS project.

But the construction opportunity often sits around the supporting infrastructure.

Before batteries can operate, projects generally need:

  • cleared and levelled sites
  • internal roads
  • drainage systems
  • foundations and plinths
  • transformers
  • medium and high-voltage cabling
  • control rooms
  • SCADA and communications
  • fire detection and suppression
  • security systems
  • grid connection assets

That is why battery projects should be watched by contractors that normally work across mining, energy, water, roads, substations, industrial facilities and regional utilities.

Many of the required work packages are familiar to Queensland’s existing industrial contractor base.

Why This Links to Regional Energy Infrastructure

Queensland’s battery pipeline is part of a wider energy infrastructure shift.

BBI has already covered the Ergon and Energex network works program, the Central Queensland Gas Power Tender and the Dugald River Mine energy project.

The latest CIS storage result adds another layer to that story.

It shows that Queensland’s energy buildout is not just generation.

It is storage, transmission, distribution, mine power, grid support and regional connection infrastructure.

For contractors, the common thread is practical work: earthworks, foundations, electrical plant, substations, access, fencing, communications, testing and commissioning.

Battery Storage Could Become a Repeat Workstream

One reason this story matters is that battery projects are likely to keep coming.

The latest tender is not the end of the Capacity Investment Scheme process.

The Australian Government has already indicated another tender will target further dispatchable capacity across the National Electricity Market.

That means contractors should treat BESS capability as a repeatable market, not a one-off job.

Businesses that build capability now may be better placed for future battery storage work across Queensland.

That includes:

  • civil contractors with BESS site experience
  • electrical contractors with grid connection experience
  • fire protection contractors familiar with battery facilities
  • security and communications providers
  • substation and transformer specialists
  • plant hire and heavy haulage operators
  • local suppliers supporting regional workforces

For businesses wanting to be found by project teams, developers and regional buyers, the Bowen Basin Index directory can support visibility across energy, mining, infrastructure and industrial supply chains.

Contractors and suppliers can also list their firm on Bowen Basin Index.

Why This Is a Project Watch Story

This is a strong Project Watch story because Queensland has secured the biggest allocation in a major national storage tender.

The key signals are:

  • six Queensland battery projects selected
  • more than 6GWh of Queensland storage capacity
  • 4.2GW / 16.1GWh selected nationally
  • 15 projects across the National Electricity Market
  • around $6 billion in private investment expected nationally
  • more than 6,800 jobs expected across construction, operations and maintenance
  • major relevance to civil and electrical contractors

The project names are important.

But the bigger point is the pipeline.

Queensland now has a fresh group of large battery projects that will need practical delivery capability on the ground.

What Industry Should Watch Next

Contractors and suppliers should monitor:

  • project financial close milestones
  • EPC contractor announcements
  • civil works packages
  • substation and grid connection packages
  • transformer and switchgear procurement
  • fire protection requirements
  • fencing and security packages
  • local supplier briefings
  • operations and maintenance contracts
  • future CIS storage tenders

The main opportunity may not be the headline battery supply contract.

For many Queensland contractors, the work will be in the supporting infrastructure that makes the battery site ready, connected, secure and operational.

Final View

Queensland’s success in the latest Capacity Investment Scheme storage tender is a major energy infrastructure signal.

Six Queensland battery projects have been selected, giving the state the largest allocation in the national tender round and more than 6GWh of storage capacity.

For contractors, the opportunity is clear.

Battery storage projects need civil works, foundations, access roads, drainage, cable trenches, substations, transformers, fire systems, security, communications, testing and commissioning.

This is why Queensland’s battery pipeline should be watched by civil, electrical, grid, fire, security, transport and regional supply chain businesses.

Battery storage is now one of Queensland’s most important emerging contractor markets.
